I am so happy that I have my sewing and blogging mojo back!! As we had the Mayor and Mayoress of Darlington visiting our school this week for our Remembrance Day assembly, I decided to sew a Poppy dress to wear.
I bought the fabric on Saturday morning from our fabric stall in the indoor market and had finished it by Saturday tea time!! It was the Simple Sew Kimono dress which was free from Love Sewing magazine. It was just a case of cutting out and sewing up…..no zip to hold me up!
I used bias binding to edge the dress and put a thin ribbon inside to hold the insides together. I did an extended belt to knot around my middle and the sleeves are slightly shorter due to using 45 inch fabric……but it was the only poppy fabric on the stall.
Remember how I just keep sewing the Lottie!?!? Well, this could be my new favourite pattern!!
If you follow me on Twitter or Instagram you may have seen my photos of the fabric and it was called The Poppy…..until I remembered I made a beautiful Ruby dress last year and it was called The Poppy! So because it has an awful lot of poppies on it it seemed right to change it’s name!!
And here is The Poppies being modelled with our Mayor…
Also with the Mayoress and one of my Headteachers! Don’t worry they were all happy to be blogged!!
So my collection of occasion dresses is growing…..and yes it’s Children in Need this week and we are dressing up as Superheroes….wasn’t that lucky? The Superhero dress is ready!!
Pattern: Kimono Dress
Fabric: 2.5 m of cotton
Notions: 5 m thin bias binding and 0.5 m thin ribbon
Wonky factor: 8/10 . I really like it however, when I sew it again……and I already have plans!! I am going to make the sleeves the correct length! I also think they need to be more draped and less sticky out!!

Hi Amanda. No races this year. Just went to a friends place to watch it on the T.V. I am busy making 11 Barbie doll sleeping bags for the girls I Nanny.
I think I will sew them some Barbie clothes for Christmas. I have never sewn clothes that small so it should be a challenge.

Lovely fabric! On a side note: I really love your hair too. It suits you!
I’ve made the kimono dress, but made a few adaptations and turned it into a full size kimono with draping sleeves for halloween (I love geishas so used the excuse to dress up as one!). I also amended the collar quite drastically. I’ll post about it soon (really need to get back into posting – eek!).
I’m going to revert the pattern back to the original (removing all the additional tissue paper!) and make one of these, becuase every one that I’ve seen looks great. 🙂

I might give it a go on the wrap dress too. It worked quite well for the costume kimono and I was so pleased with how it managed to hold its structure. I’ll dig out my pictures and get a post up soon 🙂

A great idea to make a remembrance dress out of poppy fabric. It looks great! I’m pleased to see you’ve made the kimono dress as I have the pattern and couldn’t make up my mind about it because it looks a bit ‘dressing gowny’, but yours is a lovely version and I’m very tempted!

Yes, totally agree with you. I was put off by the photo on the front but decided to have a go as it looked so simple, I think it would be even better in a fabric with a good drape to get those arms hanging nicely! Not sure what though as it needs to be thin enough to wrap without causing a tummy!

Beautiful fabric, and what a lovely idea, to make a dress for remembrance day. I’ve made two of the dress myself (on my blog!) and I think I might steal your idea and use some bias binding on the edges and make an inside tie too next time. Genius! Emy x
