i bought this beautiful fabric from White Tree Fabrics. I often blog for them and they send me beautiful fabric to make whatever I choose. This time though, I decided to make the most of my 20% off code (SEWDEPUTY) and bought two metres of this cotton.
It just had to be a Summer Ruby. When it arrived, I draped it on my mannequin and everytime I walked past it reminded me of when my children were little and watched a programme called Rosie and Jim. They were a little boy and a little girl who lived in a barge with Duck. Ginny (@sweetmyrtle) was reminiscing along with me and sent the photo of Rosie and Jim ……who still live in her house!
We decided I really did need a barge for the photo shoot and a barbecue for my nephew’s birthday at my sister’s house in York gave me an opportunity to get some boat shots!
I used the Simple Sew Ruby dress pattern and added the concealed zip down the centre back. I used the fabric to make some bias binding to edge the sleeves.
As you can see we have some very mixed weather again and the River Ouse is very high today.
We even managed to find a solitary duck for the photo shots!
I managed to find some waving passengers on a boat trip! Blog Manager was not impressed!!
She needed a mango smoothie and pain au raisin after all the river bank strolling and stress of her Mother waving at random people!
Pattern : Simple Sew Ruby Dress
Notions: 16inch concealed zip
Fabric : 2 metres from White Tree Fabrics
Wonky Factor: 9/10 maybe a little too short!

And they are selling similar on the high street!

Amanda, you look marvelous! I enjoyed your photos; they reminded me of my visits to York and I also took one of the river cruises on the Ouse. You were a very bright spot on what appeared to be a day of changeable weather. Love the fabric with your cardigan and perfect shoes. Another raving success! 🙂

Thanks Kerri! I didn’t know you had been in York at some time. My sister works in Clifford’s Tower…did you go there too??

Actually, I’ve been to York on two occasions. My first time was when I was in my 20’s and then again when I traveled to Britain with my second son when he was in his mid teens. What I remember most is the Minster and of course the Shambles and walking the city wall with all the daffodils in bloom and Margaret Clitherow’s home… oh yes, and the tea shops. 🙂 It was when I went the first time we took the tour of the river… always stood out in my mind. I remember it being a beautiful city, albeit a little cool and breezy.

Really pretty fabric. My parents have a Rosie and Jim boat on their boat that my children play with. I hope you get a lot of opportunity to wear it this week….the weather looks set to be nice and yr 6 will appreciate a bit of cheer ( including the teachers!)

Another great make Amanda. I was admiring your pattern placement, befor I read that you struggled with it, so it must have worked 🙂 Saw you in another magazine last week, well done!

Haha! It looks great though. Really pretty. So is the fabric nice? Is it a nice weight? It’s a good price! 🙂

It’s quite thin, so I think it would probably have been better with a lining, however, I just have my trusty underslip!!! I also had a few issues with the pattern placing! Trying to get it in the middle of the bodice, and also on the skirt. But, I think it turned out ok in the end!

I had to go back – I can’t notice any problems with pattern placement! I did notice the placement in the centre of the bodice at first which is nice. Thank you!

Pretty dress Amanda! I love my Ruby and want to make another soon. You’ve given me inspiration!
I also have a Rosie doll who sits in the shelf in my sewing room! Perhaps I need to lookout for a Jim to keep her company.
Always enjoy your posts and seeing what you’re up to.
