I have only one Scottish friend…Ammie. So I had to name my plaid dress after her!
This was another fabulous freebie pattern from Simple Sew in the Love Sewing magazine. I bought the fabric in August on a visit to Leeds market. I had seen lots of tartan/plaids in magazines for Autumn and this is my favourite colour blue.
I am starting to think this style of dress is best for my figure after sewing the Howe dress.
This dress was different due to the circle skirt, which I have tried to sew before and got into a terrible pickle when hemming it! However, this time all went well!
Have you noticed the gorgeous belt?
It cost more than the fabric ! However, a great investment as it hides the plaid mismatching around the waist!
It is from a company called Harlequin
You send off a strip of fabric in your waist measurement plus 25cm and then a 15cm square of fabric for the buckle. They do any width belt and I was so excited to see turquoise eyelets! I must get out more!!
The usual blog photographer managed to snap one of my best photos ever….I think it’s because you can’t see my face!
I love this dress and have another cut out and pinned on Janibob the mannequin. It is a good fit and I love twirling and whirling in it!
Fabric: 2metres of polyester viscose £8
Pattern: Simple Sew Ruby dress
Notions: 5 metres of turquoise bias binding, interfacing, 18inch invisible zipper. I used bias on the hem, the neck and sleeves and hiding the bodice/waist join inside.
Wonkiness: it’s going to get a good score as it is a fab dress and only the plaid mismatching at the bodice lets it down! 8/10

Wow! Another stunning dress! The belt really does make it extra special. Now all we need to find now is someone to make shoes to match with our fabric! How cool would that be?!

Oh yes! They do shoe clips at harlequin tho! Lol mind, have you seen the cLarks brogues with Linton tweed fabric on them? I wonder if you could buy the fabric? Ha!

Cool! Shoes and matching coat is now on my wish list!
I have that pattern but don’t fancy anything with such a low back for winter. Do you think it would be straight forward enough to raise the back?? 😃

I just bought a matching Next cardi! But I have similar thoughts and looked at pattern and decided it would be dead easy! I’ve just used bias to edge it rather than the facings. I am just sewing another one as they are nice to make! Any tips for circle skirt hemming tho???

I’ve only made one, and I used satin, shop bought bias tape, with the tape showing on the outside. It looked fab 😃

Cute dress , set off perfectly by the matching belt. Belt kits are so hard to come by so a service for them is a great idea.

Thanks Emma Jayne. They seem to make everything you could possibly need! I fancy trying the covered buttons next with the holes through the middle.

What a great print, looks great made up. I feel your pain with hemming the skirt, I’ve only made one and it was incredibly wonky. Love the belt idea too, will try to remember this tip 🙂

Oh am glad you had same problem! I haven’t heard anyone else have problems!

Nope, my effort at a circle skirt was definitely wonky 😉 The only saving grace is that there’s so much fabric, I think it’s hard to tell once they’re on. Did you get the free hemming download from Colette? I was thinking they might have something on hemming circle skirts in it? Haven’t had chance to check yet though…

I think you may be right with too much fabric to notice to be honest! I wasn’t too careful with the plaid one and it looks ok. I tried really hard with the cutting out to make sure they were the same size skirt pieces.

Looking great in your new dress, Amanda. Love this colour tartan. So tartan is on trend. I will keep an eye out down under to see if we follow the Northern Hemisphere.
I love tartan and blame the Bay City Rollers when I was a teenager. Keep on dancing, you are looking younger with each twirling photo.

Haha! You are fab Linny! Yes, lots of tartan around this season…..no soft pink coats! They did have Bay City Rollers tartan ! The choice was turquoise, red or royal blue! I have some lovely red plaid to make up (from Linton Tweeds….the Chanel fabric makers! ) so went for turquoise on the practise! My sewing machine has also just packed in……34 years I have had it! So I just ordered a new one from Singer. Apparently it threads itself and does buttonholes in one step!!! And 32 stitches! How exciting! It’s an early Christmas pressie! I can’t imagine not having a sewing machine!!!!!

You have been working your old sewing machine into the ground, making all those gorgeous clothes. A good excuse to treat yourself to a new sewing machine. I used to have a singer that did one step buttonholes, which was fabulous. My new Janome doesn’t make them as neatly as the Singer. What a change from pastel coloured coats to tartan. It is hard to keep up with the trends in fabrics sometimes. I have the Bay City Rollers CD in my player at the moment. Ha Ha. I even saw them live in Sydney in the 80’s when the band started to lose some key members. Enjoy your tartan and I look forward to seeing your creations hot off the new sewing machine.:)
