I had decided that I needed an Autumn Trenchcoat after the amazing Liverpool Lace Trench last year-I still can’t believe I actually made it!
So bearing in mind I have a navy capsule wardrobe for the Autumn, I ordered some navy gaberdine and cream paisley lining from Calico Laine.
As a blogger for them I get 20% off any of my fabric orders. I used Burda Style 7237.
Navy and cream… Classic combination.
I decided to use the same pattern for my coat but was inspired by this coat I saw on a famous burlesque dancer walking through LAX….don’t you love the bow?? Image courtesy of Google.
My favourite part of making the coat is definitely the front , it is very fiddly and time consuming but it looks so lovely when it is completed.
I love the pockets on it.
I thought it would be a good record for me to photograph it as I went along…I think there could be a new trench every year! And the pattern does get a little confusing and it doesn’t always go right!
So this is a blog post in parts.
HOW TO SEW A BOW TRENCH part 1
I started by ironing both my fabric (right sides together) and my pattern.
I then used my old cooking weights to hold down the fabric as I cut it out.
I marked directly onto the fabric with my tailors chalk …it was the wrong side underneath the pattern…and I wrote on each piece what it was!! I know, I know….some is obvious!
This all took me a good few hours as I was trying to be precise and also Annice was making herself a kimono! So we were sharing the space!
That is it for this post…keep following for the next part!
I’ve been looking for a trench pattern and this one looks perfect. Your lace trench is amazing btw, your choice of colour was spot on – so elegant

Oh great! Are you posting too? I may need tips! I have got my pockets in and am pleased with them. But not too impressed with my gaberdine. It keeps creasing!

I’ve gone for the shinier, although they are pretty similar. If you haven’t started yet I would do a crunch test and see if that affects it. Although looking at the photo of Dita’s coat, I am guessing it is a property if the fabric anyway? Otherwise, which do you prefer?

I went for the matte side,hope I don’t regret it later😊.

The lace trench is beautiful. With that success, the blue one should be just as great. I love the bow, can’t wait to see it finished.

Thank you! I am still figuring out how I will make the bow! But I am pleased with progress so far!

How do you get such precise markings with your tailor’s chalk? I can’t seem to find an edge to do that on mine. This is gonna be an awesome trench for you! Love that you’re showing us step-by-step.
Thank you! xx del

They are a bit hit and miss. I turn my ruler over, like when using felt tips so that I can get closer. Do you do that?
Thank you!

Yes, I do use a ruler… but find I don’t often judge the thickness of the ruler + chalk accurately enough to actually get the mark where it should be, instead of 1/8 off! Thank you for asking!

Oh I would say mine it the same! I have a great air soluble pen…..which is great, but doesn’t always come off!, I sometimes walk around like I have been colouring in? Hahaha

I’ve been thinking about finding some of those pens… Thanks for reminding me. Enjoy the rest of your Bank Holiday!
